Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body? Here in the South the skin is extra important. In Georgia our summers are filled with high heat and humidity. Since horses cannot pant their only way to dissipate heat in through sweating and rapid respiration.  If the sweat glands stop working, a condition known as anhidrosis, the horse can become very sick. We test horses with this condition and begin treatment before the horse gets into a crisis.

Our Georgia summers also bring insects. From ticks to flies and gnats we have an arsenal of products to keep your horse clear of external parasites. For horses that develop allergies to insects we have programs to control the allergic response including allergy testing and desensitization. Your horse does not need to lose his mane and tail every year!

Your yearly physical examination gives us a chance to screen your horse for any lumps, bumps or skin changes that need to be biopsied or removed. All stallions’ and geldings should have a yearly sheath cleaning to screen for skin cancer down under.

Horse with skin cancer now have many options. Using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation many horses can recover completely. We stock a variety of chemotherapy agents and work closely with the university for cases that need to have radiation, electrochemotherapy or photodynamic therapy.
