You have beautiful eyes! Horses have large, beautiful eyes that allow them to see predators in front and behind them. But, these large eyes are vulnerable to injuries. A superficial scratch can become a melting ulcer if not treated. Worse yet, putting the wrong medication in a horses’ eye can lead to disaster and the loss of the eye.

We carry specialized tools to examine the eyes. Out ophthalmoscopes provide intense magnification to see tiny structures within the eye. We measure ocular pressure to detect glaucoma. We routinely do corneal cultures, corneal scrapings, and corneal cytology in our laboratory. The damaged eye is painful. We place subpalpebral eye lavage systems in difficult cases so the eye can be treated without having to touch the eye. Our pharmacy is fully stocked with ocular medications so that treatment can begin immediately.

Our southern exposure frequently sends us cases of ocular neoplasia. A biopsy, surgical removal, or chemotherapy is done right away. High-risk cases can be hospitalized for intense treatment around the clock to speed healing and limit the loss of vision.
