Accidents happen, horses will hurt themselves when you least expect it.
We’re prepared to repair your horses’ laceration and we’ve seen some real doozies. If you find your horse with a laceration please call us immediately, early closure is essential. Please DO NOT put anything in your horses wound before talking to your veterinarian.
When you just can’t take it anymore we do castrations. Castration is available for all ages. A closed castration option is available for stallions at risk of herniation.
We offer a variety of surgical procedures under field surgery conditions such as umbilical hernia repairs, enucleation, scar revision, neurectomy, and splint bone fracture removal. We frequently perform deep digital flexor tenotomies for many severe laminitis cases and inferior check ligament desmotomy in cases of clubfoot. Many surgeries can be done on the owners’ farm.
We also do a variety of reproductive surgeries including Caslicks, third-degree perineal laceration repairs, and rectovaginal fistula repairs.
There are many advances in medicine for horses but perhaps the most exciting is the use of biologic tissues and fluids to enhance healing in a frontier known as Regenerative Medicine.
Where corticosteroids were previously used to mask pain and suppress inflammation we now know that these drugs can be harmful and result in permanent joint and tendon damage. By simply harvesting the horses’ own blood and processing it in our special centrifuge we use Interleukin Receptor Antagonist Protein or IRAP in joints. IRAP produces a long term effect resulting in fewer joint injections.
Blood can also be processed for Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP to help tendons, ligaments and joints heal. Using a stall side kit we can process PRP in your barn or our clinic.
Stem cells can be harvested and placed back into the horse to heal tendons, ligaments and joints. These biologic options speed healing and produce a stronger repair.
